After college, he worked 33 years for the Indiana State Board of Accounts in various positions. In 1986, he was appointed Deputy State Examiner by Governor Robert Orr. After returning to work in the west-central Indiana area for a short stint, he became the Supervisor over Counties in the Indianapolis office. In 2005, Bruce received an appointment by Governor Mitch Daniels as State Examiner. He oversaw all aspects of the State Board of Accounts until his retirement at the end of 2013.
